11th Annual Authors Reception
In Memory of Vieva Yoesting Saturday, January 19th
The Edmond Historical Society invites you to the 11th
annual Edmond Authors Reception on Saturday, January 19th
at 1pm. This year’s reception is being held in memory
of Vieva Yoesting who served as the Library Chair on the
Edmond Historical Society’s Board of Directors from 1989-2007.
The reception is free and open to the public with light
refreshments served. Guest author will be Dr. Patricia
Loughlin, Assistant Professor of History at the University
of Central Oklahoma. Author of several books, including
Hidden Treasures of the American West, Dr. Loughlin recently
co-authored with Dr. Kenny Brown and Bob Burke a manuscript
on UCO. An official Oklahoma Centennial Project, Building
Traditions, Educating Generations: A History of the University
of Central Oklahoma is a history of UCO from the late
1890s to present. The book offers many images of Edmond
and UCO. Approximately 30 students authored, contributed
vignettes, or special topics as well as 70+ interviews
with former faculty and students were conducted and included
throughout the book. This institution has faithfully served
Edmond, students from across the nation and many foreign
countries. Founded in 1891 as the Territorial Normal School,
UCO continues making history and providing excellence.
Various Edmond authors will have their books available
for sale and signing. In response to author requests,
several publishers have been invited to the reception.
The Edmond Historical Society houses a non-circulating
research library consisting of 5000+ books & periodicals.
Topics frequently utilized include UCO/Edmond high school
yearbooks, Edmond history, Grace Lawn Cemetery & early
Edmond city directories. The library also houses a genealogical
computer center (staffed by the Edmond Genealogical Society),
a microfilm reader to view the Edmond Sun from 1889-1981
and vertical files on Edmond topics and individuals.

You: Edmond’s Family Owned Businesses Exhibit
As the Edmond Historical Society celebrates its 25th anniversary
this year, we would like to look at a few family owned
businesses that have served the community over the years.
This exhibit will be on view January 2-February 16. In
the past family owned businesses provided many staple
needs of our community. Today, you see fewer multigenerational
businesses as larger companies and corporations incorporate
them. The exhibit looks at several family owned businesses
currently serving the Edmond as well as a few no longer
in business.
Visitors can view a variety of photographs, documents
and related artifacts related to various family owned
Edmond businesses. A few of the businesses included in
the exhibit are Van’s Bakery, Rodkey’s Mill, Fields Jewelers,
McCalls, Matthews Funeral Home, Parkway Cleaners, Reid
Printing, Farmers Grain, Snyder’s Hardware, Pearce Flowers
and Parsons Jewelry Store.

Edmond Genealogical Society Looking
for New Members
The Edmond Genealogical Society was established in September
1991 under the direction of Jim and Marjorie Meggs. The
society was formed to bring together people interested
in the field of genealogy; study methods of research;
assist members in their search and compilation of documents.
The society currently meets at the Edmond Historical Society,
431 S Boulevard. Meetings scheduled for November, January,
March and May will be announced in the EGS newsletter
and local newspaper. Society volunteers assist researchers
in the EHS Library each week. The society will also have
a table at the Edmond Historical Society’s Living History
Social on September 16th.
Membership is open to anyone interested in genealogical,
historical or biographical research. Membership brochures
are available at the Edmond Historical Society. For more
information about the society, contact Sharon Burns, president,
at 348-3162 or e -mail edmondgensoc@coxinet.net.
In Memory of Vieva
Yoesting
The Edmond Historical Society sincerely regrets the loss
of Vieva Yoesting who recently passed away on her 91st
birthday on November 19th. For more than 25 years Vieva
served as a secondary music and English teacher with 17
years as a fifth grade teacher at Orvis Risner Elementary.
Vieva served faithfully as an Edmond Historical Society
volunteer and Library Chairman on the Board of Directors
since 1989. She did a wonderful job organizing, maintaining
and updating the Historical Research Library which is
used daily by the staff and museum visitors. Vieva enjoyed
history and books. Keeping up with newly published books
by local Edmond authors was important to Vieva. Therefore,
the upcoming Edmond Authors Reception is being held in
her memory.
Vieva was active in a number of organizations including
Kappa Kappa Iota, American Association of University Women,
Delta Kappa Gamma, Sorosis Club and Good Books. In addition,
she enjoyed being active and volunteering at Bradford
Village and Edmond’s First Christian Church. The Edmond
Historical Society and community will miss Vieva and her
wonderful volunteer spirit! Volunteer
Spotlight
The Edmond Historical Society is honored to have so many
great volunteers that make this museum interesting. We
appreciate all the hard work that each of you puts into
this organization to make it a great place to come and
visit. This month, our attention focuses on Grace Vance,
who you will notice every Wednesday here at the museum.
Retired in 2004, Grace began working at the museum over
a year ago and has been helpful in researching genealogy
as well as the history of Edmond. Having grown up in the
city, Grace takes pride in her ability to assist those
interested in this great town. She also works part-time
at the Oklahoma History Center in their library department
researching information for visitors and employees alike.
We would like to thank Grace for all her hard work and
dedication to this organization.
